The word katana is a Japanese word meaning “sword”. It is often translated as "samurai sword" in English, but this translation isn't completely accurate. The term samurais applies to individuals who served the Samurai caste in feudal Japan and not to any particular item that they used. The correct translation for  katana would be a "modern sword". So what exactly is a modern sword ? Broadly speaking, it's an edged weapon that was developed in the 17th century by Blacksmiths from Japan who were seeking to perfect their craft and create weapons for the samurai warrior class.   A real sword is a weapon typically composed of razor sharp steel and chain-link metal. It is often used in hand-to-hand combat, or as a hunting instrument.
